Like much of the sub-continent, Basunti enjoys two long seasons akin to perpetual high summer. From mid-January to mid-May, Basunti experiences warm, dry sunny days. Even in mid-January the air temperature at dawn is seldom below 54°F (12°C) and rises quickly to 75°F (24°C) by mid-day. Flowers and shrubs start to bloom in mid-February and first flocks of migratory birds arrive for spring as temeratures rise. By mid-May the days become progressively hotter and the lake's foreshores have receded to reveal sunken temples - and improve the fishermen's chances of catching. Yet even at the hottest parts of the day the thatched verandahs and the yoga centre remain pleasant and cool. Basunti closes just before the monsoon rains arrive in mid-to-late June. The entire landscape becomes green and fresh and the grass seems to grow several feet in a matter of weeks. Over the next two months the lake's water level can rise as much as 30m. The monsoons usually last until late August. When Basunti reopens for guests in mid-September the days are warm and fine and the garden blooms all over again. This Indian summer lasts through October and November and into early December. In mid-December temperatures fall and start to rise again by mid-January.
